EDWARDS AFB LIBRARY HISTORY
MAIN LIBRARY AND CHILDREN'S LIBRARY
The Base Library moved to the present location (Bldg. 2665)
in August 1979. Prior
to that time, it was located at the Recreation Center now the Oasis
Community Center
(Bldg. 2599). It started as a Muroc Army Air Base library, until Muroc
became Edwards
AFB in January 1950. All library programs were in this building.
Included in the facility
was a children's room, where story hour sessions were offered as well as
summer
reading and holiday programs.
From 1955 until September 1993, the Library Annex, in the
housing area, had been
operated by the Kern County Public Library System as a branch library.
The Library
Annex was first housed in a facility provided by the Muroc School District.
Then in 1973,
the base provided space in Bldg. 7209. In September 1993, the Kern
County Library
System closed the Library Annex and removed all library materials,
equipment, and
furniture. The Base library took over operation of the Library Annex
(Bldg. 7209), and
purchased new books, equipment, and furniture. The collection
consisted of children's
books, with a small collection of adult fiction books and periodicals.
Also, a computer
was available for homework or games for public use.
On December 18, 2001 the Library Annex was moved to building
7210, officially becoming
the Edwards AFB Children's library, the first children's library in the Air
Force. The
Children's Library collection has expanded to approximately 9,000 items
including easy,
juvenile and young adult fiction, non-fiction and reference book, as well as
videos,
DVDs, book and cassette sets and paperbacks. There are 3 computer
stations with
Internet access and one Web Cat (on-line catalog) station.
In 1980, the Base Library had initiated electronic library
processes, with the beginning
of the OCLC interlibrary loan and cataloging. In 1995, the Super Base
Library program
started with 5 computers for public access to the Internet and e-mail.
In 1997, the Base
Library automated with the GEAC integrated library system, and in April 2002
converted
to SIRSI UNICORN integrated library system which fully automated all library
processes.
The library has progressed with the times and added new technology and
services
appropriate to the needs of it's customers. A full range on online and
CD-ROM resources
and databases are available. The Library offers a wide selection of
books, periodicals,
newspapers and audiovisual materials. Available is a typewriter, a
computer lab with 11 computers with internet access, 11 stand alone
computers, and 3 Web Cat (on-line
catalog) stations. Also a Wi-Fi connection, allowing people with
wireless laptops to
connect to the library connection anywhere inside the building. The
use of these
materials and services is free of charge. Also available for public
use in a copy machine
at 15 cents per copy and fax machine at $1.00 per page including cover sheet
within the
USA. Full reference and reader advisory services are available in
person, by telephone,
and e-mail.
